SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Athan "Thanasis" Karas

The legend "synonymous to Greek Folk Dancing" is dead.

Athan Karas, Thanasis as he liked to be called by his friends, passed away on February 12, 2010 after a valiant fight with complications from open heart surgery. He will be missed by his family and friends and he is leaving a terrible void among the Greeks of Diaspora and the International Community of Greek Folk Dance and Music. May his memory be eternal!

Athan Karas, was a very good friend, who shared the same dreams and ideals in preserving our Hellenic Heritage. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Hellenic Heritage Museum and he honored us with his presence and participation in a number of activities organized by HHI, here in San Jose.

Here is how some of the participants of those events, reacted to the news of his passing:

"Dear Marina,
Thank you for having brought Athan Karas to San Jose for the 2008 class he taught. We'll do a dance in his memory today at Pappas..."

Hi Marina,

Thanks for letting me know about the passing of Athan Karas. I have many fond memories of him from the Intersection when he was running it. I am glad that you arranged for him to give a Greek dance workshop two years ago. I am not sure whether you have the following You Tube video….
